Loubna Mrie is a Syrian journalist, activist, and writer. She covered the war in Syria as a photojournalist for Reuters and as a freelance writer.
Her writing has appeared in The Atlantic, The Nation, Rolling Stone, Time Magazine, New Republic, and The Century Foundation, among others. She has co-authored two peer-reviewed academic papers published in the Journal of Conflict Resolution and the Journal of Peace Research.
Loubna holds a master’s degree in Near Eastern Studies from New York University and a certificate in documentary photography from the International Center of Photography (ICP) in New York. Her photography has been exhibited in New York, San Francisco, Bogotá, Berlin, and Addis Ababa.
In addition to her journalistic and academic work, Loubna has spoken on a wide range of issues, from refugee rights at the Aspen Ideas Festival to censorship in journalism on a panel hosted by the Committee to Protect Journalists at the United Nations. She has also delivered talks at the Columbia Journalism School, Harvard University, and the University of California, Berkeley, among others.
A frequent commentator on the region, she has appeared on the London Review of Books podcast, Al Jazeera, Democracy Now!, and BBC World Radio.
Loubna’s work has been supported by fellowships from the Magnum Foundation, The Atlantic Media, and the New America Foundation. She has been awarded writing residencies at MacDowell, Yaddo, and Art Omi. Additionally, she has served as a jury panelist for creative nonfiction at The Anderson Center at Tower View and the Hambidge Center for Creative Arts.
Most recently, Loubna has been working on her first book, which is under contract with Penguin Random House in the United States and Little, Brown in the UK. She is represented by Bill Clegg of The Clegg Agency.
